Hicks, Gladys Chisolm,age 93, affectionately called "Hat Lady”, Granny, Granma, Nanny and Mama Gladys" departed this life August 4, 2017, in Bon Secours Memorial Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isabel and Melvin Chisolm, her loving husband, Elgin, her daughters, Yvonne Elmore and Doris Wiley and granddaughter, Luthrecia Wiley. She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Hicks, Annie Kendrick (Devandas), Elnora Allen and Samantha Sauls; grandchildren, Monique Burley (Michael), John Elmore (Mila), Yvette Elmore, Gene Arthur Sauls, Elgin Lee Sauls, Kimberly Yelverton (Jerome), Dawn Wiiliams (Antwon), Elgin Hicks (Tanya) and Akela Allen as well as her many great-grandchildren especially her beloved Keon, Kamryn, Wesley and Christina, great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. In addition she is survived by her loving sister-in-law, Mary Hicks and devoted friends and neighbors Felix Christian, Nan Shepperson and one devoted and much loved, Annie Mayo. She was saved at an early age and joined the Wesley Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Round O, SC and later upon her move to Richmond VA joined Hood Temple A.M.E. Zion Church where she was a faithful member of the Sunday School, Blue Ribbon Usher Board, Class No. 3, Missionary Circle, Food Service Committee, Flower Guild and later the Hood Temple A. M. E. Zion Church Seniors until she was no longer able to serve. She was a member of many organizations including the Eastern Star, the Peter Paul Development Center Seniors, Oakwood-Chimborazo Civic Organization, R-CAP Seniors and the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Seniors of which she was a founding member. She also was a member of the Saint Paul’s Baptist Church (SPBC) Hospitality Committee, SPBC Refiners and SPBC Midday Bible Study. She was recognized for her multitude of hats and jewelry. You never saw her without them. She loved to walk and did so as long as she was able. She loved it so much she founded her neighborhood walkers. No one was a stranger and there was never anyone that she did not share a smile, joke or kind word. She always said “give me my flowers while I can still smell them”. Before her incapacitation she gardened, raising both notable vegetables and flowers. Above and beyond all of this she loved her FAMILY. can be viewed at the bottom of this page.
